They slide fairly easy in the knuckle housing. You can press in or tap in with a hammer till they are flush. Once you start tightening the lower cap and upper arm they will shift to where they need to be in the housing. The 2x4 is to ensure they are seated against the cap and arm as they will still hold some tension, if you don't do this the knuckle will lose some bearing preload once out on the road and loosen up, you don't want that. Start with the set of shims that were originally used to set pre-load, you may have to add shims or take some away to get the pre-load right after initial assembly of the knuckle. Link has a kit you can buy. Use a torque wrench to set the pre-load.
