I have primed the pump before installing it by filling with oil and turning until no more air is coming out.
Now, when I put this pump into my newly rebuilt engine, with a full oil pan, and then start cranking it (without plugs), isn't the pump going to expel all of its "primed" oil well before oil from the pan makes its way up to the pump? I'd think the pump has a small volume compared to all the passages and oil lines, and so doesn't deliver any oil to the bearings before all the "primed" oil is used up?
So, what is the actual purpose of priming the pump?
Thanks
